Commonly called carrageen, Irish Moss is a red algae that belongs to the family of Gigartinaceae. It is rich in D-galactopyranose, L-galactose units, 2-ketogluconic acid units, omega-3 fatty acids, and nonreducing sugar units. Its major active components include albuminoids, polysaccharides, and minerals rich in iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sulfur.
