The origin of brick as a building material in central Illinois traces back to the earliest permanent settlements in the region. Local clay deposits supported small scale brickmaking operations from the 1820s onward, with kilns scattered across the central counties firing brick from native soils. These early bricks varied considerably in quality, hardness, and color depending on the clay source and the firing conditions. The Lincoln era buildings still standing in Springfield largely use brick from this period, and the variation in those original bricks is visible to anyone who looks closely. By the late nineteenth century, industrial brickmaking had standardized brick dimensions and improved consistency, though the local clay character remained. Modern brick used in Springfield, Chatham, and surrounding areas often comes from larger regional plants in Illinois and Indiana, with standardized colors and dimensions that allow for predictable construction but lack some of the visual character of the older locally produced bricks. The character variation in older locally produced brick is part of what gives Springfield’s historic neighborhoods their distinctive visual identity.
