In most cases, gallstones or heavy alcoholism can cause acute pancreatitis. Medication, infections, wounds, physiological abnormalities, and surgery are other factors. The cause is unclear in up to 30% of people who suffer from acute pancreatitis. Chronic pancreatitis is due to long-term alcohol use in approximately 45% of individuals. Gallstones, inherited pancreas diseases, and cystic fibrosis are other causes. The cause of chronic pancreatitis is uncertain in about 25% of cases.
