The Internet of Things (IoT) is shaping up to be a big part of the future of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Although the potential of connected vehicles is limited without corresponding changes to road infrastructure, cities and states currently are taking steps to redesign roads and implement new technologies. In turn, private companies can answer the call for PPP investments to support smart corridor construction efforts and help construct a connected infrastructure in support of smart vehicles, traffic signaling, and cellular-to-vehicle technologies. The ambitious Clean Energy Standard proposed by the EPA3 and the release of the White House's Advanced Vehicle-Technology Competitiveness Roadmap4 have put infrastructure at center stage in the national debate about America's future. Smart corridors can form the foundation of robust communications-enabled infrastructure needed to support autonomous, connected vehicles and new automated transportation options that are being developed in our nation’s laboratories and startup communities. With public-private partnerships (PPPs), we have a unique opportunity to meet these critical objectives through infrastructure development.
