High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is one of the five main groups of lipoproteins. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) is one of two types of cholesterol found in the blood. Like its "bad" counterpart, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, HDL cholesterol consists of a lipoprotein layer and a cholesterol center. When at healthy levels, HDL cholesterol carries LDL cholesterol from the arteries back to the liver, where LDL is broken down and excreted or reprocessed, reducing the risk of serious heart disease and long-term stroke.
