In Sanātana Dharma, Jagadguru is not a hereditary title nor a self-declared position, it is conferred only after rigorous scrutiny by the highest authorities of scriptural scholarship. The Jagadguru title literally means “Spiritual Master of the Universe” and implies complete mastery over the entire corpus of Vedic scriptures, including the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Brahma Sutras, and other Sanskrit scriptures. A true Jagadguru brings forth a new and authoritative interpretation of the scriptures that can unify or redefine the spiritual understanding of generations.
