That detention is popular does not mean it is productive or effective. I read somewhere that some teachers consider detention, especially lunch or recess detention, to be a very effective punishment for bad behavior. Bad behavior, in any context, can mean a lot of things, and I think that this is the first problem with detention in elementary and high schools all over America. What is the point of detention? There is no point that I can see… But that’s just me. However, here’s an example that shows a popular point those in favor of school detention tend to bring up; A student is not paying attention in class, which is “bad behavior” because all students should pay attention. The solution is to isolate these students, especially when their peers or friends are taking a break from schoolwork so that they can learn to pay attention in class.
