Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is unique in many ways. It ties together the three of the trinity: Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva. The lingam comprises three small, thumb-like lingams, each a member of the Trimurti. They are swayambhu, or manifest themselves. The three lingams are usually covered by a silver mask, which bears the faces of the trinity. A gold mask is worn on special occasions, and a jeweled crown is placed over it. This crown covered with precious gems dates back to the time of Pandavas.
