Acute stress disorder (ASD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur after a person experiences a traumatic event. Its symptoms usually develop within three days of the event and can last up to one month. During this time, the person may experience intense fear, helplessness, or horror. Symptoms of ASD include flashbacks, nightmares, avoiding reminders of the event, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and feeling detached or numb.
