Pune, previously known as Poona, was India's most significant industrial and educational hub and had a population of 7.4 million as of 2020. Poona served as the city's official name from 1818 until 1978. Pune Metropolitan Region, with a physical area of 7,256 sq km, is the largest in Maharashtra by area as of 2021. It has repeatedly been referred to as "the most livable city in India."
