Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that may have various health benefits, such as boosting your immune system and gut health. Probiotic foods have been around for thousands of years, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that scientists realised that bacteria had potential health benefits. In 1907, Russian scientist Elie Metchnikoff linked the long lifespan of people living in the Caucasus mountains to the daily consumption of fermented yogurt containing a probiotic he named Lactobacillus Bulgaricus.
