The acoustic Doppler current profiler works by communicating pulses of the sound wave in a constant recurrence in the water. As the waves travel, they expel particles suspended in the water and reflect the ADCP. Due to Doppler impact, waves returning from a molecule moving away from the profiler have somewhat reduced recurrence when they return.
