In simple terms, we gain weight by taking in more calories than we burn off. For example, a person that consumes 2500 calories a day but only burns off 2000 calories will gain weight at the rate of about 1lb a week. However, weight gain can also be caused by health conditions such as thyroid hormone deficiency (hypothyroidism), food sensitivity, prescription use, organ disease, blood sugar imbalance, or anxiety.
