Does relationship counselling actually work? My partner and I have been arguing for years, and I'm skeptical it will change anything at this point When you say you've been arguing for years and doubt anything will change - what you're really describing is a pattern that's become deeply entrenched. And you're right that that's harder to shift than a pattern of six months. But "harder" isn't the same as "impossible," and what makes the difference isn't time elapsed - it's whether both people are genuinely willing to look at their own contribution to the dynamic, not just document their partner's. Relationship counselling - particularly Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) - has among the strongest evidence bases of any therapeutic approach. Studies consistently show significant improvement in relationship satisfaction for couples who engage genuinely with the process. The word "genuinely" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
