Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but it should not be considered a treatment for a gum infection. Some mouthwashes contain small, diluted amounts of tea tree oil, though evidence for their effectiveness in treating gum disease remains limited. Never apply pure tea tree oil directly to your gums or swallow it, as it can cause irritation and is toxic if ingested. Persistent gum pain, swelling, or bleeding should be evaluated by a dentist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
