Oxycodone and Dilaudid (hydromorphone) are prescription opioid medications used for moderate to severe pain, but they differ in potency, speed of action, and side-effect profiles. Dilaudid is generally stronger, so lower doses are needed to achieve the same effect. Oxycodone is often used for ongoing pain, while Dilaudid is more commonly given for intense or breakthrough pain, especially in hospital settings. Both can cause drowsiness, nausea, constipation, and carry risks of dependence and overdose. Choosing between them depends on a patient’s medical history, pain severity, and how they respond to opioids. Always use these medications exactly as prescribed.
