Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a long-term condition in which leg veins fail to efficiently return blood to the heart. Normally, vein valves prevent backward flow, but with CVI these valves weaken or become damaged, causing blood to pool in the legs. Symptoms include leg swelling (edema), varicose veins, heaviness or aching in the legs, skin discoloration, itching, and ulcers near the ankles.
