Dark patches on the neck, also known as acanthosis nigricans, manifest as velvety, thickened, and hyperpigmented skin. Often occurring in folds of skin, these patches are associated with underlying health conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, or genetic factors. The discoloration results from excessive melanin production and can vary in size and intensity. Though primarily cosmetic, they may indicate health concerns requiring medical attention. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, including weight management, lifestyle changes, and topical creams containing retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids to promote skin turnover. Regular monitoring and consultation with a healthcare professional are recommended.
