The 2000–2003 Z8 and 1998–2003 M5 vehicles are powered by the BMW S62 engine. With a 4.9L V8 engine that produces 395 horsepower and 370 torque, it is a remarkable engine for its day. However, given that all S62-powered BMWs are getting close to 20 years old, it's clear they're aging swiftly. Almost every engine issue is fair game, given the age. We'll discuss a couple of the most typical S62 issues in this piece, so if you're in the market, give it some thought. Once more, the M5 and Z8, driven by the S62, are not getting any younger. The four problems listed below are some of the most prevalent and/or worrisome: Rod bearings for the VANOS system Failures of the timing chain (less frequent than on M62) oil leaks, mostly from gaskets on the valve covers Certain problems, like the S62 rod bearings, aren't always the most prevalent ones.
