The poultry industry continues to be impacted by the 2017 avian influenza outbreak, which was brought to South Africa by migratory wild birds and which has resulted in almost five million birds being culled. The national layer flock decreased by almost 7% in 2017, resulting in decreased egg production and consequent higher egg prices.
