Overall shopper penetration increased as consumers made Christmas more of an occasion this year. Overall Christmas shopper penetration increased to more than 80% in 2021 compared to 2020. After an interrupted 2020, consumers spent more this Christmas as they socialized with friends and family, making it more of an occasion for shoppers to spend slightly more in 2020. Despite more than 20% of consumers feeling slightly or significantly better off this year compared to last year, more than 30% of consumers used some form of loan, in 2020, to finance their Christmas purchases indicating the appetite to splurge out on gifts and festive items.
