The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Periyar University in Salem on 17 the 17th September , 1997 in accordance with the provisions under the Periyar University Act, 1997. The university is home to the colleges of four districts, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Namakkal. It has 106 college within the four districts above that are affiliated with this institution to provide students with education. Therefore, Periyar University has become the largest higher education institution. The name of the university comes from Social reformer E.V. Ramasamy who was fondly known as Thanthai Periyar.
