A liver transplant may be required either as an emergency procedure or as part of a carefully planned treatment pathway. In an emergency liver transplant, surgery is performed urgently, often within hours or days, because the patient is at immediate risk of liver failure due to trauma, acute liver disease, or sudden organ failure. In contrast, a planned (elective) transplant is scheduled in advance. Patients on the transplant waiting list are closely monitored and prepared over time, allowing doctors to optimise health before surgery and reduce complications.
