In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure that involves retrieving eggs from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm. This fertilized egg known as an embryo is frozen for storage or transferred to a woman’s uterus. The doctor can also implant embryos in a surrogate carrier. Before starting the IVF procedure, a woman wanting to conceive has first to undergo ovarian reserve testing, which involves taking a blood sample and testing it for the level of follicle-stimulating hormone. This test gives the doctor the required information about the size and quality of a woman’s eggs.
