Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by the loss of skin pigmentation, leading to the development of white patches on the skin. It occurs when the melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin (the pigment that gives color to the skin) are damaged or destroyed. The exact cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to autoimmune, genetic and environmental factors. This condition is not contagious and can affect people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
