Lip tie refers to an issue in which the top lip of an infant is linked to the lower lip via an elastomer. It can result in problems in speech development, breastfeeding, and feeding. An infant lip tie can be corrected surgically in the early years of life. This procedure must not be delayed because it may impact the child's speech development and suckle ability. Many newborns suffer from this condition and often require corrective surgery to correct the issue. However, some babies may not require surgery if their lips are properly loosened when they breastfeed.
