How is knee revision surgery performed? Knee revision surgery is performed when the original knee joint replacement has failed. The most common reason for knee revision surgery is aseptic loosening, which is when the implant becomes loose from the bone. Other reasons for knee revision surgery include infection, wear and tear, and fracture. During knee revision surgery, the surgeon will remove the old implant and any damaged bone or tissue. The area will then be cleaned and new implants will be put in place. The new implants can be made from metal, plastic, or ceramic. Knee revision surgery usually takes between two and four hours to complete.
