Former Germany and Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm will refuse the FIFA World Cup this winter due to host nation Qatar's poor human rights record. FIFA has been widely criticized for awarding the tournament to the tiny Gulf state with a population of over 2 million. Qatar, which had never qualified for the World Cup before, was ranked 113th in the world when it won the right to host the tournament, which has been moved to winter this year due to the country's extreme summer temperatures. Lahm, the former Bayern Munich fullback, led Germany to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and is now the tournament director of the DFB Euro 2024. But the 38-year-old said he would not be at the World Cup in Qatar. German head coach Hansi Flick says Timo Werner's return to his former club RB Leipzig is good news for the league and the players as they continue to compete at the highest level in the run-up to the World Cup which is set to close at the end of the year.
