Difference Between Sales Order and Invoice The sales order and the sales invoice are both tools for order tracking. Ultimately, both make their way to the accounting office. The primary difference between the two is the point of origin. A sales order originates with the customer as she is making a purchase. A sales invoice acts as a bill that is delivered to the customer for a product delivered or a job completed. The two are used very differently in the business world, but both serve as accounting documents post-completion.
