The University of Zagreb, established in 1669, is the oldest and largest university in Croatia and one of the most venerable institutions in Southeast Europe. Founded by Emperor Leopold I Habsburg, the university evolved from the Jesuit Academy of Zagreb, which was granted university status and privileges. The Jesuits managed the academy until 1773, when Pope Clement XIV dissolved their rule. Following this, the university broadened its curriculum to include Law, in addition to Philosophy and Theology, solidifying its role as a pivotal institution for Croatian intellectual development until the late 19th century.
