Turbochargers have an important role to play in the area of reducing fuel consumption, as well as the emission of greenhouse gases and CO2. Electric turbochargers have long been discussed as being the next stage in turbocharger development. Simply, electric turbochargers rid turbocharged engines of lag as the turbo spools up. The latest iteration of the electric turbocharger has been demonstrated in early 2014 by Audi in an RS5 3.0 V6 twin-turbo diesel. In the Audi solution, rather than a standalone electric turbocharger there’s an e-booster, effectively a supercharger, that works separately forcing air into the impeller of the smaller of the engine’s two turbochargers.
