Sciatica occurs when there is pain along the sciatic nerve path that splits from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down both legs. Sciatica pain only occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine, or narrowing of the spine squeezes a part of the nerve.
Sometimes, people will experience sciatica on only one side of their body. It can be mild or severe and can also cause the affected part of the body, like the leg or foot, to feel weak or numb. Untreated sciatica pain can permanently damage your sciatic nerve. This, as a result, might lead you to lose feeling in the affected leg. It can also lead to the loss of bladder and bowel control.
