Need to know about Private Fostering Private fostering is when a foster carer, who is neither a parent nor a "close relative" (such as a great aunt, cousin, mom's friend, or a neighbor), looks after a child or young person for at least 28 days in their home who is under 16 (or under 18 if the child or young person is disabled). Children who spend more than two weeks over the summer break in residential schools are also included.
