The digestive system and various supporting organs, urinary system, spleen, and abdominal muscles make up most of the abdominal area (see below). The peritoneum, the protective membrane that surrounds most of these organs, serves as their sheath. The kidneys, ureters, and bladder are located outside the peritoneum, making them what some scientists call the pelvic organs. In contrast, the digestive organs and other organs are located inside the peritoneum.
