Copper cables are probably one of the oldest and most widely used ways of conducting electricity. It has been in use since the 1800's, since the invention of the telegraph and telephone. By some estimates, more than half of mined copper is used to make copper wires and cables. Electrical project managers often prefer copper cables over other available alternatives due to their highly conductive properties and high melting point.

The process of turning pure copper bricks into copper cables is called extrusion. The simplest way is to melt bricks, called ingots, and stretch them through machines called extruders. Various manufacturing steps then produce different types of copper wire, including solid cables or twisted products, also known as braided copper wire.

Copper wire is used almost everywhere because of its ductility (flexibility), corrosion resistance, weldability, and strength. You'll see them installed in power transmission, generation, distribution, residential and commercial building electrical use, and even in wiring components in equipment and circuits.
