Paper Mache first came to India in the 14th century through the Persian mystic Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, who was visiting Kashmir from Persia. The Persian method of making paper mache was similar to that of Central Asia. Over time, Kashmiri artisans gave their touch to the art form, drawing immense attention. There are two broad steps in preparing a paper mache product, Sakhtsazi and Naqashi.
Sakhtsazi is an age-old process in which paper is first soaked in water for several days, then drained and mixed with rice straw, cloth and copper sulphate to form a pulp. The mixture is placed on a mould and left to dry for two to three days - next coated with glue, gypsum and smoothened using stone or baked clay. Later plastered with layers of tissue paper.
