A block diagram of a computer system is drawn in such a way that it becomes very simple to understand the most important functional components of a computer which are Input Unit, CPU, Memory, and Output Unit, as well as the flow of data through them. The diagram does not display intricate circuits but rather emphasizes the central features that deal with data input, processing, storage, and output. The user actions are transformed by the Input Unit into a format that the machine can understand. The CPU along with its ALU, Control Unit, registers, and cache carries out instructions via the fetch–decode–execute cycle. The Memory Unit keeps both temporary and permanent data with the help of RAM, ROM, and secondary storage while the Output Unit returns the results to the user. This block diagram not only makes it easy for the students and beginners to visualize the cooperation of each unit in carrying out the tasks but also forms a basic step for IT, hardware, AI, and computer engineering fields which is why it is such an important concept.
