More than 66 million years ago, an asteroid crashed into the Yucatan Peninsula causing the coral reefs of this region to dry up. The cenotes (from the Mayan "dzonot" which means well) are the proof of this prehistoric past. They are natural wells of fresh water formed following the collapse of the ground of limestone rock.
